Stove top heating element gets red hot when set at 7. Is it the element or electrical/switch or something else?

Hi Robert,
Thank you for your question. If you set the burner element to 7 and it goes to a higher setting you will need to check both the element and the burner switch for continuity with a multimeter on the Rx1 setting to see which part is causing the issue. Before removing and checking these parts, unplug the range from the electrical outlet. First visually inspect the element for any signs of bubbling, burning, wear, holes, or damage. If the element is fine, test the element with the multimeter. Touch each of the terminals one at a time with one probe while holding the other probe to the outside surface of the element. If either terminal shows continuity, it is defective. To test the entire element for continuity, place each of the probes on the terminals, one on each. You should receive a reading between 19 to 115 ohms. If you get any other reading you will need to replace the element. For the burner switch, first check the wires near the switch for any signs of burning, or overheated wires and terminals. If there are no visible signs of damage, test the switch with the multimeter. Touch the L1 and H1 terminals with the probes. Once you have completed that test, touch the probes to the L2 & H2 terminals. If your test results indicate that there is no continuity between one or both sets of terminals, you need a replacement infinite switch. We hope this helps!

I pulled my unit out of the wall and noticed that the insulation around the top broiler element was a bit brown. Closer inspection revealed that the element had shorted somehow to the oven itself and caused the element to become non-functional. I ordered from PD and the part arrived just a few days letter by regular shipping. I undid the screws holding in the element, undid the wire connectors and replaced the broken element with the new one. The element worked like a charm and I was back in business for cooking.
PF alarm appeared on display. Noticed clicking when cord was moved. Had arced for some time and melted original block. New part slightly different. Only has 3 lugs, old one had six.
