Trash Compactor Directional Switch
★★★★★
★★★★★
15 Reviews
PartSelect Number PS11744742
Manufacturer Part Number WP777811
The function of the directional switch on your trash compactor is to ensure the ram lowers to compress your trash, then returns to the top position. If your trash compactor does not complete this task, will not stop at the end of the compacting cycle, or is noisy during operation, you may need to replace the directional switch. Be sure to disconnect your trash compactor from the power source before completing this repair. This is a fairly easy repair. After you open the control panel of the compactor, all you will need to do is unplug the old switch from the electrical wires, and plug the new switch in.

Trash Compactor ram wouldn't lower
I pulled the trash compactor out from under the counter.

I took out the four screws that kept the top cover in place to expose the ram.

The gear shafts were turning but the ram would not lower, at first I though the ram drive bolts were stripped and it wouldn't engage the shaft. Then I realized there was a mechanical directional\limit switch at the top that controlled the power and direction the gear shafts were turning, this switch was broken.

Just had to take off the front plate that was held on by a number of screws and replace the switch that was held on by two more screws. It had five wires attached to it, the new switch was clearly labeled as to which color wire went where.

The rotary switch kit is also known as the start switch or the on and off switch, and is used to power on your trash compactor. The function of the rotary switch kit is to control the electrical power that is going into your trash compactor. This process happens when the switch sendsvoltage to the motor to start the compacting cycle. If your switch is broken the trash compactor will not start. A multimeter test can be performed to test the switch for continuity. The rotary switch kit will come with an on and off rotary switch, and two chrome knobs.

Trash Compactor Off-Switch Actuator Kit
★★★★★
★★★★★
6 Reviews
PartSelect Number PS3489806
Manufacturer Part Number W10342596
This kit contains everything you will need to replace your faulty off-switch actuator, including: normally closed switch, toe guard, template, 2 screws, and actuator. If your trash compactor keeps running after the cycle is complete, you may have a defective off-switch. The off-switch is used to supply power to the motor to initiate the compaction cycle. Check to see if the off switch has been damaged, and that it is working properly. However, if the switch is damaged, or will not stop the cycle when the button is engaged, the off-switch will need to be replaced. NOTE: This part has been redesigned by the manufacturer, but will still function the same as the original part.

Beware the "two screws, five minutes" repair stories!
Needed a replacement actuator for KitchenAid trash compactor model KUCS03FTSS0. The part that broke is a small metal flange held in place by two screws. PartSelect.com clearly shows this part in the online exploded view of Container Parts. When I received the replacement order in the mail, I was surprised that it was not what I thought I had ordered (a single replacement piece), but a new, *completely redesigned* actuator kit. For this model (and perhaps for other models) this new kit requires much more extensive work than just replacing two screws. Repair entailed removing the trash compactor from its installation position, removing the recess cover and machine front, disconnecting and removing the old actuator switch, drilling holes in the machine front, attaching the new actuator assembly, and disconnecting and reattaching the foot pedal. Not an overly burdensome or complicated repair, but I had been fooled by the expectation of it being a five-minute job! (Submitted on 7/2/2011 by Scott - Ventura, CA) Read more...
